Metta Bhavana is a meditation practice for cultivating loving-kindness. Pali was the common language of the time of the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama. Metta is a Pali word for love, friendliness, or kindness. Hence, loving-kindness is how it is most often translated. Bhavana means developing by means of thought or meditation. And so, Metta Bhavana is developing loving-kindness towards ourselves and others through meditation. This practice helps us to feel more positive, accepting, kind and patient towards ourselves, and therefore capable of being more compassionate and loving towards others.
